Polar Bear by Mats Jonasson

Mats Jonasson

The glassworks in the Swedish village of Maleras, was founded in 1890.

Mats Jonasson’s father was employed at the glassworks.  Knowing that Mats was good at drawing and needing an engraver at the works, his employers asked if he could start there.  Thus, on leaving school at the age of fourteen, Mats Jonasson started at Maleras.

After ten years at Maleras, Mats moved to Kosta, returning to Maleras in 1975.  He became one of the leading figures at the works, and helped to defeat a hostile take-over bid for the business in the early 80s.

Since 1981, the number of employees has increased from 15 to 90 and the production of glass reliefs has become characteristic of the works.  Nature and glassware lovers all over the world take delight in Mats Jonasson’s brilliant glass objects, where animals, flowers and plants are rendered with realism and sensitivity.
